KW Vipers U17 Juvenile Boys win provincial gold
The KW Viper U17 Boys Basketball Team won the Division 1 Provincial Championship in Newmarket, beating out 55 other teams for the coveted title — the first Viper team in the organization’s 20-plus-year history to win the provincial title. The boys also did it as an underage team (could have played in the U16 age group).
They finished 24-4 in Ontario (27-6 overall) with three tournament wins and two second-place finishes. With wins over Scarborough Blues, Hamilton Wildcats and Toronto Fire in their pool games, the #1-ranked Vipers beat #2-seed Brantford in the final (42-41). SJAM Jr. Star (and WCSSA tennis champ) Dragan Stajic hit a step-back 3 at the buzzer for the win.
Other Viper Boys’ teams have successful Ontario cups
The KW Viper U13 Bantam Boys won the third gold medal of the season for K-WYBA when they took the D4 title in Niagara in April. Despite a loss in the opening game of pool play to the Mississauga Monarchs, they rebounded with wins over North Region and Team Breakdown to gain a berth in the final. They finished their season off with a 50- 44 victory over MUMBA Basketball.
Two other Viper Boys’ teams, U10 Novice and U19 Junior Elite, finished their seasons with fourth-place finishes in Division 1 Provincials.
U16 Major Midget Viper Girls won Pennsylvania AAU tournament
The U16 Major Midget Viper Girls, under coaches Eddie Lopez and Jody Moore, travelled to Pennsylvania in May and won an extremely important AAU tournament. The most impressive fact was that these girls were actually U15-age! The win moved them on to the Nationals in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in June. Congratulations for all your hard work.
Successful end-of-the-season Viper Banquet
Over 400 Viper players, coaches, managers, parents and other family members closed the 2015/16 season with a very successful banquet in the Forbes Room at RIM Park. They enjoyed a great meal catered by Mel’s Diner staff, numerous door prize giveaways, four silent auctions and a continuous loop of hundreds of pictures of Viper players and teams.
Each team was introduced along with a short review its accomplishments and the announcement of its Most Improved Player and its Mr. or Miss Viper — the team’s player who had exhibited all those characteristics that make a good teammate throughout the season. The three teams who won gold at their Ontario Cups received special introductions and congratulations. It was a very good way to end the season.
