The Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce that 11-year head coach of the men’s hockey program will be filling the vacant position of Associate Director for the next year. Bourque has been the interim Associate Director since the position became open in October and has more than exceeded expectations.
“I am thrilled that Brian has agreed to take on the leadership of this key portfolio,’ said director of athletics and recreation Roly Webster. “This provides us continuity by a respected leader during a critical time for our department’
As Associate Director, Bourque is responsible for overseeing the annual operational and revenue generating budget, the disbursement of annual athletic awards, maintaining league requirements for all 32 varsity teams and over 600 student-athletes, providing peer management and leadership for seven full-time coaches, and many more vitally important aspects of the department.
Bourque has been a member of the department since 2003-04 where he began as an assistant coach of the men’s hockey program. The Cole Harbour native has since turned the men’s hockey program into an OUA contender each season boasting an overall coaching record of 196-116-23-5 and has been named the OUA coach of the year twice (2006-07, 2009-10).
At the national level, Bourque guided the Warriors to the 2013 University Cup (CIS Championship), their first since 1996 and was the general manager of Team Canada at the 2011 FISU (World University Games) that won bronze medal. Bourque will once again join team Canada at the 2017 FISU Games in Almaty, Kazahkstan as the general manager and associate coach.
“There are a lot of exciting developments within our department. I feel fortunate to have been given the opportunity and look forward to working with our great staff to continue to develop and improve our services,” commented Bourque.
This is also an exciting time for the men’s hockey team that will begin the search for an associate head coach to assist Bourque on all facets of the program.
“Brian is well-respected by his colleagues, league peers, and the campus community making him the perfect fit for the job,” concluded Webster.
