The The Waterloo U12 Gold soccer team participated in Region 1 games in London recently, playing two full-length games on a very hot and sunny Saturday.
In their first game, against the Sarnia Spirit, the girls communicated well and easily worked the ball around their opponents thereby creating many scoring opportunities and converting on most of them. The highlight of this game was a six-player passing sequence that beautifully transitioned the ball from our defensive third to a shot, without the other team even getting near the ball! The girls were so dominant that they ultimately switched their play to a possession game.
The second match was against the London Whitecaps. Playing in even hotter field conditions with a reduced roster, the first half was evenly matched — a very impressive showing against the highly skilled and physically imposing London team. (Of note, the London coach let our players know that they were their toughest competition in the last six months.) The girls kept their mental cool, continued to look for the smart pass and played to feet whenever they could. Minimizing the need to chase down long balls helped our girls avoid tiring themselves out further. The coaches are particularly proud of how, even while exhausted, the girls never stopped being mentally engaged, gave their best effort and used everything they had in the tank right until the final whistle blew.
Congrats to the team!
