This past year, the Grand River Soccer Club teamed up with volunteers from the district soccer association and local referees to give back to the community. The club hosted its annual Kick4aCure adult co-ed charity soccer tournament in support of the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre.
The tournament was an exciting day for everyone involved. Twenty-eight teams participated in the daylong event held at the Core Lifestyle and Recreation Complex and Com-Dev Indoor Soccer Park. Organizers emphasized their fair play philosophy and stressed the importance of fun and friendship, both of which factor heavily in all of the club’s leagues and activities.
The competition included many local players and teams of all skill levels from beginner to advanced. It also attracted several soccer enthusiasts from London, Hamilton, Guelph and Toronto, all of whom share a passion for the game and contributing to a cure for cancer.
We would like to thank our major sponsors for the day: The Sports Link, Natural Sound, Hercules Mina @ Mortgage Ingenuity Inc., Cambridge Pharmasave, Minuteman Press (Cambridge) and The PC Depot.
A cheque was presented to the Grand River Hospital Foundation in the amount of $11,379. Through entry fees, pledges and raffles, the tournament has raised in excess of $25,000 over the last two years. Next year’s tournament is scheduled for February 16, 2015.
