Speed skating is a great sport for people of all ages and levels of ability, and racing on skates is exciting for both competitors and spectators alike. On October 15 and 16, the KW Sertoma Speed Skating Club’s competitive team, the KW Cobras, will launch the 2016/2017 season with a province-wide meet for 200 skaters. This first meet of the season brings together racers who represent a wide developmental range of experience in the sport, giving spectators the opportunity to see the fresh excitement of new skaters in their very first meet as well as highly skilled athletes already competing at provincial and national levels. For the duration of the season, Ontario speed skaters compete in differing tiers at various regional and provincial meets.
For many of the athletes, the October meet at RIM Park will be the start of a six-month journey that culminates in provincial and national championships. As they race to achieve both placing and personal best ranking times, skaters will be stretching their competitive muscles and regaining focus on the season ahead. Strength and technique are key components of speed skating but, additionally, successful racing depends on good strategy and effective coach/skater communication. Spectators witness intentional decision-making and learn about when to go out in front, when to follow and when to pass — just in time to win the race!
This local meet is a great opportunity to learn more about one of Canada’s most popular Olympic winter sports. The skaters won’t be the only ones who will be busy on the weekend. Meets such as this require approximately 100 volunteers including coaches, officials and a multitude of club members. Many hands are involved to ensure that safety, fairness and fun occur both on and off the ice.
The KW Cobras compete both days, and represent the full range of experience — from brand new to nationally ranked athletes. Come out to the Piller’s Rink at RIM Park for this free event on October 15 and 16, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, and watch the fastest sport on ice!
